Definition:
A tense in which the event that the speaker is referring to precedes the time of the state of affairs denoted by the sentence. Also referred to as 'past in past' form. Past perfect can also be used modally to represent situations as non-factual or counterfactual. [Michaelis 2006: 223; Depraetere and Reed 2006: 271]
