Definition:

An auxiliary mark or symbol added above, below or after conventional graphic signs to give more information about the pronunciation of the sound represented in writing. Such diacritic marks include acute accent, apostrophe, caret, cedilla, diaeresis or umlaut, grave accent, macron, tilde and circumflex. [Hartmann and Stork 1972: 65]
